Three good examples of digital design
This first image I picked is one of the magazine covers designed for my schools fashion Magazine. The Designers who worked on this were Cally Croco, Eliza Mosbarger, Jenaye Alston, and Nicole Saye. I think this is a great example of digital design because although the piece is in black and white it has tons of contrast. The designers choose to repeat the color scheme of white greys and black which I think was very wise. By sticking with these colors there is a contrast to the piece that would not have been produced had they choosen to stick with one color. I think the typography of this piece also brings alot of contrast. There’s mixes of bold fonts with thin fonts but it’s still cohesive because each of the fonts is sans serif. The allignment of the each of the words is also very well thought out because your eye is able to move all over the page with a clean layout.
This next piece is a magazine cover from a beauty subscription box I get called FabFitFun. What I think is really effective about this cover is the size of each font. They choose to make “Rocky Barnes” the biggest size phrase on the page. By doing so I think it’s the first thing readers look at when they see the cover which is wise on their part because seeing a models name instantly captures your attention and you want to read more. Repeating the alignment of the each text ( having them all centered) and keeping the same font for everything really makes the piece cohesive from start to bottom.
Lastly I have the google logo. What I think is interesting about this is that google actually rebranded themself. Before there logo used a Serif font and you could see the strokes of each letter but now it is sans serif no longer including the strokes. They do a good job in repeating the font and size of each letter but to add contrast they use five different colors. I think this was wise on their end because the logo has depth and contrast to it but if they were to make each letter a different color I think it would be to much for the eye to look at.
Jessica Walsh
Jessica Walsh is a professional graphic designer who is also the founder of creative agency & Walsh. Walsh grew up in New York where at a young age was coding and designing websites. She then went to the Rhode Island School of Design where she got her bachelor degree in fine arts. After college she was offered a job at Apple but instead turned it down to intern with Paula Scher at Pentagram. Walsh has worked for Print magazine as a assiocate art director and Sagmeister inc until starting her company “& Walsh”. She also teaches design and typography at the School of visual arts in New York. Walshes designs have been described as “bold, emotional and provocative” . One of the reasons I am so drawn to Walsh is because of her bold design aesthetic. I think when it comes to digital design it is hard to take risk and easier to play it safe with designs layouts you are already familiar with. I think Walsh brings something new to the plate in each of her designs but still shows her personal style in each. Each design I have seen uses bright vibrant colors and each piece almost gives an abstract vibe. While there is an abstract vibe to her pieces they also aren’t overwhelming she finds the perfect balance in her compositions. Walsh seems to make her own rules when it comes to designs and isn’t afraid to be herself in each of her pieces. Her pieces play wiht photography and digital design in a cohesive manner. I also like how she plays with the human body alot. In this first piece she uses the mouth in a cool way. With a subtle color of blue that almost looks like wall paper she makes each month come out in a diffrent way giving a 3d appeal to the piece. In the very center is the name of the event with the text jsut the right size. The secound piece I choose looks like it comes straight out of a comment book. This piece was created for a department store campaign. Using bold colors like vibrant green and blue she overlays fun patterns on top of the colors to make them pop. The center of the design has objects that I assume the store sells such as shoes and a purse while two manuqins with fun wigs and makeup are also in the center.

Portraits
For this assignment, we are challenged to first mimic a portrait and then take four of our own getting creative with light and frame. For me I found my best photos were from natural light outside. When trying to use my dorm lighting I realized very quickly that it was not a great light source and then got creative and used a dark room with a flashlight which gave me some cool shots. If I were to do this differently I would try and shoot my indoor pictures inside the Communications building or indoor space with more natural light.
5 objects
For this project we were challenged to pick five items that had meaning to us and use the image to tell a story. For me I had to get creative for this project because I lose everything so had to focus more so on hobbies that were Important to me. I decided to photograph my paintbrushes, guitar, and guitar pick in order to show my passion for art and then decided to photograph my favorite pair of shoes to show my love for fashion. Lastly I photographed a coffee mug because I would be a different person without caffeine.
